Online Readers Opinion Poll Pleased With Black Stars But Dissatisfied With Mills & Rawlings’ - 7/24/2010 - Bookmark and Share

By Sydney Casely-Hayford, www.bizghana.com

The opinion poll of readers of Business in Ghana website and The New Ghanaian readers worldwide, handed a resounding applause to the Black Stars for their performance in South Africa, but gave a hands down clear disappointment with the Mills government.

The online opinion poll ran between 13th and 23rd July this year, covered sports, electricity tariffs, oil allocation, politics, The Korea STX deal and the Rawlings house saga.

In the survey, 61% of respondents would like Coach Rajevac to stay with the Stars, with 12% undecided. The same 61% majority think Ghana should start using its own home grown coaches while 21% say no and 17% are uncertain about using Ghanaian coaches. Only 2% expressed displeasure with the Stars’ performance. 69% said they are very pleased and 28% are moderately pleased with the Black Stars.

Had the Black Stars not been “suarezed” at the quarter-final stage, 86% of respondents thought they would have gone on to beat Netherlands and reach the finals of the World cup. 13% disagreed with this statement.

When it comes to utility tariffs and the TUC stand on the hikes, 63% agree that the TUC should embark on an all out strike for demands to be met and the rest disagree.

48% of readers think the communities in the oil discovery zone should be given preferential share of the oil profits, 32% disagreed and 19% think they deserve most of it.

“Ghana Sweet Crude” emerged as the most popular name for the crude oil in international markets. Some very interesting options for names came up from readers when asked for a unique name for our light crude. Sika Mpoano Sweet Crude, NaDom Nti Crude, Agyenkwa Sweet Crude, Sankofa Crude, Banku Crude and one of our readers thought this an irrelevant matter.

When readers were asked if they agreed with the statement that Kosmos’ sale of its stake in the Jubilee fields does not help Ghana in any way, 60% thought it did not help Ghana while the remainder thought it would help Ghana.

The biggest split in votes was whether readers agreed with Nana Akufo Addo Danquah’s statement that the NDC’s “Better Ghana Agenda” was already a failure. 48% said yes it was a failure and 52% said no. We did not ask readers for their reasons and plan to do so on the next round of polling.

34% of our readers said they were not familiar with the terms of the Korea STX deal, and could therefore not say whether they liked the terms and conditions of the sale or not. 21% of those who knew of the deal agreed with the terms and 43% said “no” they do not agree with the conditions of the contract.

We asked a multiple question for the Rawlings house saga. “In examining the Rawlings family’s housing situation, which of these closely describes your view of their “plight”?. 25% said they were being opportunistic, 19% said it was childish, 13% thought it was all “politrix”, 23% agreed that this was a matter of double standards. The remainder 30% saw their display as greedy and only 13% thought it was just and fair of them in answer to the question as posed above.

But the most important indicator of confidence or not in the Government was a resounding negative. Only 21% of readers said they were very satisfied with the Government’s performance. 27% are not at all satisfied and 51% are not much satisfied. At close to half way stage in the 4-year term, 78% of Ghanaians did not give the government a confidence vote.

Online readers were polled through our websites across the globe. We received 170 results over the limited time and this is by no means a scientifically conducted poll. If however, it reflects the general trend, then the Mills Government has a lot of work ahead. Copies of the results are available on request. Send an email to info@ghananewsmonthly.com with “poll results” in the subject line. Thank you to all our readers who took part in the survey. Our next survey will be out at the end of August.
